Your Help is Needed to Make Schools Idle Free

Unnecessary engine idling on our school properties is a serious problem that damages the health of our school children, teachers, administrators, visitors and bus drivers as well as our global environment.  Last summer, legislation was developed to ban unnecessary engine idling on school properties throughout the Commonwealth.  The legislation – Senate Bill 2628, "An Act To Improve School Campus Air Quality" – passed by unanimous vote in the Senate on April 10.  It is now awaiting action in the House Ways and Means Committee.

Please email your Representative and ask them to support S2628. Ask them to call Representative Canessa's legislative aide Marissa Hunnewell at x8981 or email at marissa.hunnewell@state.ma.us to sign onto the letter asking Chairman DeLeo to move this important legislation out of the House Ways and Means Committee favorably so the full House has the opportunity to vote on S2628

Talking Points

  • More than one million children and teenagers attend school in Massachusetts each day;

  • Motor vehicle exhaust is highly toxic to human health and the environment, and many chemicals found in these fumes are identical to those found in tobacco smoke;

  • Long ago, Massachusetts banned the use of all tobacco products on school properties.  Now, we must do the same with unnecessary motor vehicle exhaust, which contains many of the same toxic chemicals as second-hand smoke

  • S2628 will ensure that our children, teachers, staff, school bus drivers and visitors are able to breathe cleaner, healthier air.
